A week after the Tony Awards held its 75th show, the Broadway League has finally decided on a huge move for all its showgoers.
Greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Manhattan District went dark in 2020 following the closure of many theatre productions.
With the alleviation of health protocols in the country, Broadway reopened its doors again in the Summer of 2021.
Broadway Mask Mandate Officially Dropped
In a statement that Broadway League released recently, they have announced that 41 Broadway theatres have officially dropped the face mask mandate for its showgoers.
For the month of July 2022, all mentioned Broadway theatres would be adopting a "mask optional" policy. Nevertheless, attendees will still be encouraged to wear masks inside the theatres.
"Millions of people enjoyed the unique magic of Broadway by watching the 75th Tony Award Ceremony recently. Millions more have experienced Broadway LIVE in theatres in New York City and throughout the U.S., since we reopened last fall. We're thrilled to welcome even more of our passionate fans back to Broadway in the exciting 22-23 season that has just begun," Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement.
However, the mask mandate protocol is not the same next month. It would be evaluated on a monthly basis as the league will continue to monitor the science of the policy.
The august mandate will be announced in mid-July. The COVID-19-impacted productions also received a nod at the 2022 Tony Awards a week ago, particularly praising the importance of understudies in the recent tumultuous season.
