After recent internal strife within the group slowed their progress, Live appear prepared to go forward. Ed Kowalczyk rejoined the band in 2016, but recent efforts to reunite have stagnated, as the vocalist revealed in an Instagram post this week. According to the lead singer, he now has a majority stake in the band, and one of its veteran members has been fired.
What does holding majority rights even mean?
It probably just means having the leeway to do more. After all, Kowalczyk seems to be lamenting the fact that he could not release new solo music, or else he will be sued. Also, it might mean more collaborations, such as the recent one he has with Avira.
In recent years, Canadian DJ Avira has developed a reputation for remixing vintage music. Next on his list is a remix of a Live alt-classic. One of the most popular songs of the 1990s, "Lightning Crashes," has been reincarnated as an EDM song with Ed Kowalczyk.
It was embraced warmly by the fans. According to Mendo Werks magazine, this rendition of "Lightning Crashes" will appeal to music enthusiasts regardless of genre preference.
Avira herself said hearing Kowalczyk's voice sent chills down her spine.
Before announcing Chad Taylor was fired, Kowalczyk appeared to respond on Instagram to a fan who had inquired why he had not released new solo music because he had recently been working on songs."I would love to perform - but it's not possible in the current situation with the band," stated the singer, before adding, "The three other original members are not speaking to each other - and I am stuck in the middle - and if I try to go solo, there is a good chance they will sue me again - so I have to do what's best for me and my family and try to stay out of litigation by not performing in public at all."
The singer continued, "I'll have to lay low till circumstances improve."
Later on, Kowalczyk suddenly posted: "As of last evening, I own 55% of Live. Chad Taylor is fired. He will never stop the music again. Thank you all for your amazing love and support. I cried multiple times yesterday reading your comments and messages - it really means the world to me and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart."
In 1984, Kowalczyk, Chad Taylor (guitarist), Patrick Dalheimer (bassist), and Chad Gracey (drummer) formed the band Live in York, Pennsylvania. Before Kowalczyk left the band in 2009, their albums Mental Jewelry, Throwing Copper, Secret Samadhi, The Distance to Here, V, and Songs From Black Mountain had a tremendously successful run in the 1990s and early 2000s.
