Dove Cameron is one of the many Disney stars who pursued a career in music after their debut in the media network.
The Disney alum made her breakthrough on Liv & Maddie, where she starred in a double role. Since then, Cameron has taken on singing roles, even landing a role on the Live TV adaptation of Hairspray on NBC.
But despite her success on television and in music, Cameron seemed to be drifting away from her Disney roots, revealing how she felt "out of place" with the stereotype.
Dove Cameron Television, Music Career
Dove Cameron started her first television stint at 16 years old on Shameless.
A year after, she landed her official Disney gig on Liv & Maddie, playing the titular double role.
Upon taking the role, Cameron's career skyrocketed - which prompted her cameos on other shows within the channel, including Cloud 9 and Austin & Ally.
In 2015, Dove Cameron then took on the role of Mal in the Disney Television Film, Descendants.
Playing as the daughter of Maleficent (played by Kristin Chenoweth), the role became Cameron's springboard to take on more musical roles, eventually making her way to Hairspray Live!
Three years after, Dove then took home a Daytime Emmy for Liv & Maddie while she was already doing a lot of shorts and films on the Descendants franchise.
Cameron kickstarted her music career in 2019, releasing her debut EP Bloodshot/Waste. She then went on to release five more songs before Boyfriend, which charted at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, marking her highest position on the coveted list.
But despite her emerging success, Dove Cameron opened up about her struggles in the entertainment industry, revealing how she suffers from depression and dysmorphia.
Dove Cameron Suffering Imposter Syndrome While Working On Disney
Speaking to Los Angeles Times, Dove detailed how she felt out of place while working on the media network.
"I never had that moment where I was like, 'I'm a Disney girl.' I never looked at Miley, or Demi, or Selena, or Zendaya or Bella, or anybody - Hilary Duff or anybody that came before me - I never looked at them and thought, you and me - same," she explained.
The 26-year-old singer also added that there was always a "strange outlier" who did not belong to the stereotype Disney girl, which then prompted her imposter syndrome.
"So I don't really look to anybody else for a roadmap. I mean, this whole narrative that I was on Disney and then found my way out with a pop song, it was a total f-ing accident," Dove elaborated.
Billboard hailed Dove Cameron as the #1 Emerging Artists on a May 2022 chart.
