Taylor Swift, once known for holding a famous and expensive annual star-studded Fourth of July party almost yearly, skipped the festivities this year. She had a perfectly valid reason though, although quite a sad one. It has to do with her boyfriend Joe Alwyn, whose presently mourning after losing a loved one.
Alwyn's great-uncle, British peace activist Bruce Kent, passed away on June 8 following a brief illness at the age of 92, 2 weeks shy of his 93rd birthday.
He was vice-president of Pax Christi, a UK Christian peace group, and emeritus president of the Movement for the Abolition of War at the time of his death.
His wife, Valerie Flessati, and his sister, Rosemary Meakins, Alwyn's maternal grandmother, survive him.
The 32-year-old pop sensation was spotted attending his burial on the US holiday.

Swift was among the 400 friends, family members, and parishioners who came to pay their respects to the political activist, in addition to the 300 spectators who watched the broadcast.
Swift is seen sat in the front pew of the church beside Alwyn's mother Elizabeth Meakins and his grandmother in a video obtained by Mail Online UK.
Later, the 31-year-old British actor joined Swift and the rest of his family in the pew for the remainder of the funeral mass.
Swift was occasionally observed resting her head on her boyfriend's shoulder while they held hands during the ceremony.
The singer who began dating Alwyn in 2016, blended in with the gathering of mourners by intently listening to the funeral program and singing along to church hymns during the service. It's apparent that she did not want to draw special attention to herself.
The couple's relationship has been notoriously quiet, and they rarely engage in public shows of affection.
"Keeping it private from the beginning really helped their relationship," a source once told People magazine. "They were able to get to know each other in peace." The source also adds, "Their personalities are very compatible, and they're respectful of each other's careers."
But as this event shows, PDA pales in comparison to real compassionate and loving act. Taylor Swift will be there for Alwyn where it truly counts.
That said, Swift's attendance at the funeral certainly provided a rare and intimate peek into their relationship.
