Shawn Mendes halted his highly-anticipated global tour. This was a decision he made in an effort to take care of his mental health. As he seemed to have adopted a wait-and-see attitude as to when the tour will continue on, it begs the question whether the whole tour has truly been cancelled, not just delayed.
The 23-year-old hitmaker of "Stitches" stated that he has "reached his breaking point" and needs time away from the spotlight to rest and reset.
The "Wonder: The World Tour" tour of Mendes kicked off in Portland last month and was scheduled to run until August 2023.
"This breaks my heart to have to say this, but unfortunately I'm going to have to postpone the next three weeks of shows through Uncasville, CT until further notice," the Canadian singer told fans in an Instagram post on Friday.
The "Treat You Better" singer revealed that it was never easy for him to spend so much time away from his loved ones, and that this time was no exception.
"I've been touring since I was 15 and to be honest it's always been difficult to be on the road away from friends and family," he explained.
"After a few years off the road, I was ready to dive back in, but the decision was premature and unfortunately the toll of the road and the pressure has caught up to me and I've hit a breaking point."
According to Mendes, he consulted with his team and mental health doctors, who encouraged him to take "time to rehabilitate and prioritize my mental health."
He assured his fans that if there are already additional updates, he'll be the first to let them know.
It is not the first time Mendes has opened up to followers about his mental health struggles.
In April, he posted a lengthy tweet in which he stated that he frequently ponders "what I should be doing with my life."
In a follow-up tweet, he reassured his fans he was well, tweeting, "I'm honestly so okay! I just wanna communicate with you guys in a real honest way. so I just typed I big old note out for you lol."
Mendes recently, in a conference call with reporters, said he is experiencing some worry about returning to performing after spending so much time with his family.
In general, however, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to tour once more.
"Playing live has been my life force since I was 15," the 23-year-old Mendes said, adding that the Eagles Ballroom at the Rave in Milwaukee was "one of the first locations" he remember playing and loved. In 2014, a week following the release of his debut EP, he opened for Austin Mahone at a packed Ballroom.
