Demi Lovato is going back to their roots in their current era as they ditched pop music to focus on the genre of pop-punk. The Disney Channel alumna recently released a music video that gave fans the ultimate 90s and Y2K nostalgia with a help of a good friend.
According to Harper's Bazaar, the 29-year-old singer dropped the song "Substance" as the latest single from their upcoming album "HOLY FVCK," which will be released on August 18.
Accompanied by a music video, Lovato wore several outfits from the early 2000s era and even ditched their signature mullet to wear a blunt bob wig with fringe bangs.
Her first look was a red minidress with a checker-print blazer that she wore while trashing a board room with executives of a record label.
They later changed into a white dress that got decorated with spray paint during a wild party.
In the end, Lovato can be seen riding a motorcycle while wearing a trashed fur coat.
The music video also got a cameo from the OG queen of the early 2000s, Paris Hilton.
It appears that the socialite/DJ enjoyed her time while filming with the singer as she took to Instagram to share behind the scenes photos.
"Always an epic time with @DDLovato #SUBSTANCE out now! #HOLYFVCK #Sliving," she wrote.
In an interview with Audacy Check In, Demi Lovato, who identifies as non-binary and prefers "they/them" pronouns, explained the meaning behind their new song.
"I feel like we live in a world where it lacks so much depth. We're all connecting through social media. We won't see a friend for three years but we'll be talking through social media all the time. That human connection is what we're missing," they said. (via Dexerto)
The "Camp Rock" star then added that the content people consume is like "trashy reality television" where the public questions where is the "depth in this world."
The latest music release comes a month after Lovato announced their upcoming studio album titled "HOLY FVCK."
The record is a follow-up to their successful 2021 album "Dancing With the Devil... The Art of Starting over."
Lovato's new LP will feature 16 new tracks and will be released on August 19 via Island Records.
