How Did Chris Cornell Die?
In 2017, Cornell was found dead inside his Detroit hotel room.
According to Detroit News, he entered his hotel room after Soundgarden concluded its concert at the Fox Theatre on May 17 of that year.
When his wife Vicky called, she reportedly noticed that the then-52-year-old was slurring his words and sounded groggy. Still, he assured her that he was just tired.
Still, she asked the band's bodyguard to check on her husband. Bodyguard Martin Kirsten gave the singer two doses of the prescription anti-anxiety medication Ativan.
After the 11:35 p.m. call, Vicky called Kirsten and asked him to visit her husband. Since the room's door was locked, he kicked it open after calling hotel security through a phone in the hallway.
"Security stated they can not let him into the room because he is not registered to that room. At this time (Kirsten) kicked in the door with his feet and ... went to the bedroom door and (the) latch had been engaged on this door also... (Kirsten) again called for security but could not gain access to (the) room," the police said.
However, he found Cornell on the bathroom floor, "blood running from his mouth and a red exercise band around (his) neck." Medic Dawn Jones untied the band and started CPR on the singer who was no longer breathing.
EMS Unit 42 also arrived on the scene. An emergency medical also tried to perform CPR, but a doctor had already pronounced him dead on the scene.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner also confirmed that his cause of death was suicide by hanging.
Cornell's family also sued his doctor due to over-prescribing him with drugs, but they later settled the issue.
