Pop Smoke's death almost led to the downfall of a music sub-genre.

Over two years after Pop Smoke's untimely and tragic passing, Fivio Foreign talked about the rapper and how he did not think the New York drill rap would survive without him.

Speaking on Kid and Wallo's "Million Dollaz Worth of Game" podcast, Fivio Foreign confessed that the other drill rappers thought that the drill rap would die following the murder of the young rapper. Pop Smoke famously influenced the sub-genre.

"He was gone, he was there, he was putting on. We were all coming up, but he was clearing the way for n-ggas, like, 'Yo come on, this way.' He was embracing n-ggas and when he died, it was almost like, 'Damn, this shit just might die out altogether,' 'cause he was putting on," the "City of Gods" rapper said.

Despite his concerns, the sub-genre flourished even after Pop Smoke's death that it reached places outside New York City. This gave the spotlight to drill rap songs and albums, including his debut project, "B.I.B.L.E," which entered the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

However, Joe Budden suggested last month that the drill rap had already reached its demise.

"It's over, buddy, in the next five, six years. The writing is on the wall, and that's government-issued writing. That's not Joe. That's government-issued writing. Don't start hitting me, mad at me. I'm just telling you what I'm looking at," he went on.

What Happened to Pop Smoke?

In 2020, a 15-year-old horrifyingly murdered the then-20-year-old shooter in an attempt of stealing his diamond-studded Rolex and Cuban link chain. The intruders reportedly ambushed him in Los Angeles and only managed to steal the timepiece, which they later sold for $2,000.

According to the investigator, the youngest of the four defendants was charged with murder and robbery. He also admitted his role in the crime during a recorded interview months after the killing.

LAPD Det. Carlos Camacho said, "He admitted that he shot the victim three times with a Beretta 9 (mm.) They got into a fight, and he shot him three times. He said he shot him in the back. He said that when the individuals got inside, the suspects confronted (Pop Smoke), who was in the shower naked."

As Pop Smoke decided to fight them back, the 15-year-old decided to shoot him, leading to his tragic death.
