Rick Springfield Cancels First Australian Tour in 30 Years to Star in Film With Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline

Rick Springfield has opted to cancel his previously scheduled tour in Australia due to his work (as an actor) in Ricki And The Flash.

That seems bad enough as it is, but Australia is also the "Jessie's Girl" songwriter's homeland, and he hasn't played a show there in more than 30 years. How does one go 30 years without playing a show in his homeland? No idea. At least the movie isn't some SyFy monster flick: Ricki And The Flash is written by Juno's Diablo Cody and will star Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. Streep will play a woman who dedicated her life to her band and ignored her family in the process, and Springfield will play her guitarist, who happens to have a crush on Ricki.

Springfield played the apologetic boyfriend role when mollifying hurt fans on social media.

"So sorry to have to cancel the Australian gigs and for all the inconvenience to those who made travel plans etc around the shows, as well," he said. "But this movie with Meryl Streep is a great opportunity and I will make it up to anyone who is bummed out. Dinner perhaps? A movie? A little cuddling after?"

Nothing's official as of yet, but Billboard reports a source "close to Springfield" to the publication that "he will be coming back."

The performer may have gotten over Jessie's girl and moved onto Streep (or director Jonathan Demme), based on his letter to fans.

"Honestly if Meryl Streep and Jonathan Demme had asked me to wash their cars I would have cancelled my Hawaiian vacation and bought my own soap and bucket," he said.
