Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, dislikes posing for photographs with members of the public and claims that people requesting photos with the band "ruin" encounters for the musicians.
One Twitter user told the 59-year-old singer that his remarks have caused some online debate among music enthusiasts. "Standing for a brief photograph shouldn't be difficult."
Luke Vesely, a RHCP fan, tweeted about a chance meeting with Flea and Chili Peppers' vocalist Anthony Kiedis in Seattle, stating "we didn't talk much, but flea did shake my hand and anthony gave me fist bumps, they were very kind!" Flea's initial comments on the matter were in response to Vesely's tweet.
Tagging Flea in a follow-up tweet, Vesely added, "thank you (and AK) for being so kind and genuine while meeting us, you both are such rays of sunshine, you didn't have to stop and chat but you did and i hope you know that you really impacted our lives. we love you and AK with all of our hearts!"
In response, Flea tweeted: "It's because you all generated a kind and gentle light, and you didn't ask for a picture. We are always down to talk and chat, asking for a photo ruins it instantly."
When another Twitter user asked "what's wrong with fans requesting a photo?" Flea responded: "There is no problem with it. However, this disrupts actual discussion. It is an exchange."
This remark appears to have angered some RHCP fans, as one posting demonstrates: "Posing for a photograph should not be a chore. Meeting you guys is such an unforgettable experience for fans that they want to capture and treasure it forever. I'm fairly certain you've desired images with your heroes?"

Another wrote, "It appears that other transactions, such as purchasing your records, concert tickets, or merchandise, are acceptable, and if a fan respectfully requests a pictorial keepsake, you should gladly provide, as it is only because of them that you are able to live so nicely."
Flea concluded the conversation by expressing that he has "respect and thanks" for every fan of his band, but insisting that he has never asked anyone for a photo.
