Mariah Carey has formally filed legal filings with the US Patent and Trademark Office to claim ownership of "Queen of Christmas."
Despite the objections of numerous other celebrities, TMZstated that the "We Belong Together" hitmaker has a relatively simple route to eventually register and legally acquire the title.
Many celebrities, including acclaimed singer Darlene Love, have spoken out against her ideas. Even singer Elizabeth Chan objected to the award-winning diva's petition, arguing that no one has the right to "monopolize" the term "Christmas."
Darlene, who also has a Christmas song named "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," asked on Facebook, "Is it true that Mariah Carey trademarked 'Queen of Christmas?'"
She also pointed out that Dave Letterman conferred the title on her 29 years ago, therefore it isn't supposed to be accessible to Mariah Carey now.
According to the site, no one has petitioned for the title save Mariah, but that doesn't mean she'll receive it.
In example, they noticed that while Michael Jackson did not attempt to register "King of Pop" during his lifetime, other renowned persons attempted and failed to do so.
This is because it was so closely associated with Michael Jackson that it would perplex the market.
However, the estate of the "Thriller" hitmaker did register the title after his death, thwarting attempts by others to exploit the same title.
Could Mariah Carey Be Successful With 'Queen of Christmas' Trademark?
In response to Elizabeth Chan's claim that no one can ever make money from the popular holiday phrase, TMZ clarified that this does not appear to be the case.
The site discovered trademarks for additional occasions, such as "Thanksgiving" for a winery brand and "Happy Valentine's Day" for fruit drinks.
They went on to explain that they discovered "Christmas Spirit" registered for an alcoholic beverage, therefore it's safe to conclude that the way is clear for Mariah to formally become the Queen of Christmas.
Mariah also has one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time, "All I Want For Christmas Is You." She has not, however, been dubbed the "Queen of Christmas," as Michael was with "King of Pop." So she simply needs to submit the trademark to officially and legally obtain the title.
Mariah also intends to utilize the moniker for other products such as perfumes, nail paint, jewelry, coconut water, toys, apparel, lingerie, and even hoodies.
According to the outlet, in addition to "Queen of Christmas," she is also attempting to register "Princess Christmas" and "Christmas Princess."
