In an interview with Rap Life Radio's Ebro Daren, Royce Da 5'9" admitted that the joint album he shares that he and Black Thought was in the works.

"We got way more unreleased stuff than we have stuff that's actually out there. But we were actually working on an album together at one point," said the rapper.

However, he then revealed that it was a struggle to put together an album because of Black Thought's schedule, "Tariq is real busy. It'll be times where he's sending me a verse every week. And then it'll be times where I don't get nothing from him for six months."

Individual Works

This is not the pair's first collaboration; they have previously worked together on various singles and features. They released "Rap on Steroids,'" featuring Toby Nwigwe, in 2020.

While their collaborative album was put on hold, both artists released music independently.

Royce's solo LP, "The Heaven Express, Vol 1" was released on Aug. 12, boasting 15 tracks.

"Re-ownership of the masters. And I think that's very important. It's the start of a conversation, the right conversation," Royce explained why he decided to release a greatest hits album to Darden.

"Encouraging artists to look at each song on every project that you do like an asset, like all your intellectual property."

"A project like this, that's why I didn't want to call it a compilation. I don't want it to be anecdotal. I don't want it to sound like a talking point,"

"Everybody's doing a compilation, or this, or that. This right here, this is just like the lunatics being freed from the asylum."

Meanwhile, Black Thought's single "Cheat Codes" also dropped on Aug. 12. He collaborated with Danger Mouse, who produced the album, A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$, Russ, MF Doom, Raekwon, Run The Jewels, Conway The Machine, and more.

Another Case Of Delay?

Black Thought has been working on his solo album for the longest time. It went by numerous names and had some soft launches here and there but never seemed to form as one cohesive album fully.

Black Thought, or Tariq Trotter, finally realized his dream of a solo album with "Cheat Codes," According to some reports, they called it "that quintessential Black Thought" album.

It's now no surprise why his joint album with Royce was put on the back burner. However, Royce is still hopeful that their joint album will one day be completed and released.
