Robin Williams Dead at 63: Comedic Icon and Actor Reportedly Committed Suicide

Beloved actor, comedian and voice actor Robin Williams has died. Today (Aug. 11), his press representative and the Marin County Sheriff's Office in California announced the Mrs. Doubtfire actor had passed away in an apparent suicide. He was 63 years old.

According to The LA Times, a 911 call occurred at 11:55 a.m. PST this morning with Williams unresponsive in his home. When paramedics arrived, they announced the funnyman dead on the scene.

"Robin Williams passed away this morning," his representative Mara Buxbaum said in a statement to ABC News. "He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Williams is best known for his comedic roles, haven broken into the mainstream conscious in the TV program Mork & Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982.

Known for his erratic brand of comedy, Williams became an American icon of the screen and standup stage. Though best known for his heartfelt comedic roles in films such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Aladdin, Patch Adams, Flubber and Good Morning Vietnam, Williams was also a celebrated dramatic actor.

In 1997, he took home the Academy Award for his role in the dramatic film Good Will Hunting, in which he played psychologist Dr. Sean Maguire.

Williams was also noted for his dramatic work in movies such as The Dead Poet's Society.

Despite his critical acclaim and success in the entertainment world, there was a darker side to WIlliams. He struggled with depression in the later months of his life and recently revisted a rehab center to focus on his sobriety -- he had battled cocaine addiction in the past.

He will be greatly missed by the masses and was a true American icon.
