Despite his massive following on Instagram, Kendrick Lamar's profile is blank. He also does not frequent Twitter, save for promotional purposes.
In an interview with Citizen, Lamar explained his frequent social media breaks, "we all love attention, but for me, I don't necessarily adore it. I use it when I want to communicate something."
The "N95" rapper noted that his privacy "has never been an issue" he had to carry out, "it's just who I am. If I feel I have to remove myself, I just remove myself."
Growing With Fame
The 35-year-old singer acknowledged that dealing with fame is not easy. It takes time to grow and get used to one's success and fame, he said.
Lamar keeps a low profile despite being dubbed as one of the most influential rappers of his generation. He, however, is not too fond of being recognized as such. Whenever the pressure felt too overbearing, he would retreat back into his space.
He got into music as a teenager, going by the monicker K. Dot, by releasing a mixed tape. This caught the attention of TDE, who offered him a record deal.
He then released his debut studio album, "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City," in 2012, which catapulted him to fame. His debut album received critical recognition and mainstream success.
Since then his presence in the music community has grown, but his social media presence has stayed the same.
"People ask me, 'Man, you've never been on social media, you really hate it?' Bro, I don't really know how to use it like that to be 100% real with you," he jokingly shared.
For the "Die Hard" rapper, social media is simply a communication tool. Although he is aware that fame as an artist would definitely cost him his privacy, "it never really frustrated me when things got a little bit out of control because ultimately, I knew that I would be able to balance it because of who I am."
Kendrick Vs. Kendrick Lamar
Lamar explained that despite being in the industry long enough, he is still perfecting how to balance his authentic self and the persona people know him as.
He regards himself as Kendrick, not "the greatest," as some would refer to him. This is evident in the way he graciously accepts awards for his work and quietly goes back to whatever he was doing.
His sporadic appearances left fans and audiences wondering whether he has retired-but he hasn't.
In May, he released "Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers," and is currently on tour until December 2022. Despite his low profile, his tour is anything but. Variety called "The Big Steppers Tour" the pinnacle of performance art.
