Zella Day has been through a lot these past few months. In June, she released "Radio Silence," a song about pro-choice, and shared her experiences with her unintended pregnancy.
A month following that, she released "Mushroom Punch," a song off of her upcoming sophomore album "Sunday In Heaven." The highly anticipated album is slated to be released on Oct. 14 via Concord Records, boasting 12 tracks that the 27-year-old wrote herself.
What Made The Cut?
The Arizona-born singer shared that she had penned about 70 songs for 'Sunday In Heaven," noting that some of them have been written in various random places.
The "Radio Silence" singer revealed that "Almost Good" was written on a tablecloth in Ojai. Some songs were written during car rides while she was cross-country driving or in her kitchen.
Although it is only set to be released this year, some of the songs have been written back in 2020, during the height of the pandemic lockdown.
The 12-track-album opens with "Mushroom Room," "Am I Still Your Baby?" "Dance For Love," "Girls," "Golden," "I Don't Know How To End," "Radio Silence," "Bunny," "Real Life," "Almost Good," "Last Time," and the title track "Sunday In Heaven."
"Radio Silence," released the previous month, is a song that reads as pro-choice, and Day has been vocal about her stand in the issue.
"This is the first time in history where a constitutional right has been added and retracted," she explained to the Alternative Press.
"[...] I'm deeply saddened when I think about how much pain and suffering women have already gone through, and the impact that this is going to have on so many. I really believe we deserve better."
An Inspired Day
According to the Broadway World, "Sunday In Heaven" saw something like divine intervention in the form of producer Jay Joyce, whose Nashville studio, The Neon Church, became the birthplace of the forthcoming album.
Day also enlisted the help of John Velasquez and Alex Casnoff to produce the album; Carla Azar of Autolux and Daniel Tichneor of Cage The Elephant also contributed.
Their report described the album as "a record that shrugs off any modern pop production flourishes that could tie it to a specific era by design."
Each song off the album is reportedly a different genre from the last. However, one thing is for certain-Day's powerful vocals are evident in each song and her lyrics are heartfelt.
Day first got into music at age 9, when her mother encouraged her to become a musician. She began writing songs as early as then, and in 2009, she finally released her debut album "Powered by Love."
