The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards was a bomb and by far one of the best nights in music this year. With a star-studded roster of performances from nominated artists, the VMAs surely had iconic moments that will go down on both television and music history.
Taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards was hosted by three hip-hop stars, LL Cool J, Jack Harlow, and Video Vanguard Recipient Nicki Minaj.
For those who still have not watched it or those who would like a recap, we listed down the top moments of last night and the things you might have missed.
2022 MTV VMAs Highlights
Johnny Depp's Moonman Landing
Reports of Johnny Depp appearing in the 2022 MTV VMAs came about earlier this week. Well, the not-so-surprise appearance seemed to be warranted as Depp has recently ventured again into the world of music post-Amber Heard Trial. However, his moon man landing in Prudential Center did not quite get the fanfare MTV was expecting, well, based on Twitter.
Red Hot Chili Peppers Taylor Hawkins Tribute
The Red Hot Chili Peppers accepted this year's Global Icon Award after a performance of their classic 2022 hit "Can't Stop" and "Black Summer." Before Flea started thanking the trees and cockroaches in his acceptance speech, drummer Chad Smith took the time to dedicate the Global Icon Award to the band's dear friend, the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Lizzo Recreated the 2015 VMAs
Lizzo's colorful performance of "About Damn Time" and "2 Be Loved" was one of the highlights of last night's show. But during her acceptance speech for Video For Good Award, she had the best clapback to Aries Spears' fat-shaming jokes. Lizzo made a Nicki Minaj impression of the rapper's infamous callout to Miley Cyrus last 2015 VMAs, and it's good (no pun intended).
Fergie's Glamorous Entrance in First Class
Jack Harlow opened the VMAs ushering everyone into "First Class." With a star-studded plane including Chloe Bailey, Saucy Santana, Jimmy Fallon, and even Avril Lavigne, the opening performance was a mood setter. Harlow capped off the performance with a surprise appearance from Fergie herself, who sang "Glamorous," which he sampled the 2022 MTV VMAs Song of the Summer from.
The Nicki Minaj Hit Medley
Ever since Nicki Minaj was confirmed to be at the 2022 MTV VMAs, she has been a trending topic on Twitter for days. Right before accepting his Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Nicki performed a career-spanning medley of her hits, including her current Hot 100 leader - "Super Freaky Girl."
Taylor Swift's Bombshell Album Announcement
Taylor Swift won big this year, thanks to "All Too Well," who bagged three awards - Video of the Year, Best Longform Video, and Best Direction. During her VOTY announcement, in which she is clearly shocked, she dropped a huge news bomb - her 10th new album announcement.
