Ahead of the release of his highly anticipated debut album "Electric Dusk," Leon Thomas dropped the music video for "Love Jones," a song off the album, featuring Ty Dolla $ign.

Something Of The Movies

The Grammy-awarded singer moved to Los Angeles from his hometown of Brooklyn, New York, and took inspiration from his new surroundings.

"The 'Love Jones' music video is a collection of all the things I love about living in California. Having an LA legend like Ty Dolla $ign made the entire concept much more authentic and real," he shared.

Thomas explained that his music-making process involved watching movies. He would leave a movie playing in the background as he produced music, and for his current single, Thomas was playing "Love Jones," one of his favorite movies.

"I love the cinematography, I just love the vibe of it, it just feels good. I wasn't able to actually use the scene that I originally had in the intro, but that intro kind of inspired a lot of what I was doing lyrically," he continued.

"That's an experience that I've also gone through personally living in California. Everybody's got a dream and they're chasing something more than just a white picket fence and a family."

What Took Him So Long?

It is a wonder why the talented singer, songwriter, and producer took so long to release his debut album, but Thomas has released music here and there from time to time.

Prior to the release of "Love Jones," Thomas dropped "X-Rated" in May, collaborating with Benny The Butcher.

In an interview with Uproxx, Thomas shared that the song comes from "such a very specific place" that attributed to his music and forthcoming album.

Just like "Love Jones," "X-Rated" was also inspired by the 29-year-old's environment, which at the time was New York. "'X-Rated' to me had a lot of that boom-bap attached to it, and adding in Benny The Butcher really, really took it over to the top into that '90s and nostalgic place."

Watch Out, Leon Thomas Is Here To Stay

Thomas is no stranger to music. He has been musically inclined from a young age and was on Broadway for a time.

He revealed that his stint at Broadway helped shape his work ethic and foundation in music. He also cited his family, who are "also very involved in music."

"I just feel like growing up around amazing musicians has always helped me fall in love with music from the aspect of people who really spent time perfecting their craft and coming through with a unique ability," he said.

Some fans also know him as his character in the hit Nickelodeon series "Victorious," André Harris.

But Thomas has since then moved on from acting to pursue a career more focused on music. His name has been tied to Ariana Grande, Drake, Post Malone, Kehlani, Rick Ross, and more.

In 2018, he released "Genesis," his debut EP. It boasted seven songs including "Favorite," "PLW," "Sunken Place," "Moments After," "Blessing," "Beg," and "Mrs. Variety."

And while the world is still waiting for more music from Thomas, he says that he's taking it easy, and focusing on R&B music: "I feel like over time, it's just gonna all come together, it's gonna work out."
