Opeth's drumkit has been vacant for almost a year since Martin Axenrot left the band in 2021, but the group has finally announced that they found his replacement; who could be the new drummer?
According to Loudwire, Sami Karppinen of Therion has been playing with the group as a temporary drummer, but they recently revealed that Waltteri Väyrynen will permanently take the spot.
The drummer is popularly known for previously being a part of several bands like Bloodbath, Bodom, and Paradise Lost.
In a statement, Opeth said his duties are implemented immediately and he will be playing his first show on September 14 in their show in Estonia.
"We just had our first rehearsal with Walt yesterday and it went incredibly well! We were all very nervous beforehand, but Waltteri completely killed it! Pure delivery!" Mikael Åkerfeldt commented.
He added that they practiced 16 songs in total and he didn't have any correctional comment for their new member.
Speaking about Waltteri's attitude, Mikael said he's an "awesome bloke" with a genuine, super nice, and funny personality.
The lead vocalist added that he's excited about Waltteri joining the group and looking forward to playing with him at their live shows.
In concluding his comment, the singer expressed his gratitude to Sami for filling in the vacant spot when they "needed saving."
Waltteri Väyrynen Leaves Paradise Lost Days Before Joining Opeth
Just two days before joining Opeth, Waltteri announced his departure from Paradise Lost, saying his decision doesn't involve any "bad blood or drama."
In a statement released on the band's official Twitter account, the drummer said he's sad to announce his exit and he's thankful for the band for an "incredible journey."
He later thanked his bandmates Nick, Greg, Steve, and Aaron, as well as the management and the crew for making him feel at home for almost eight years.
Why Did Martin Axenrot Leave Opeth?
In an interview with Blabbermouth, his Bloodbath bandmate Nick Holmes revealed his actual status with the band, saying he's still a part of their group, but he hasn't seen him in years.
Regarding his exit from Opeth, the vocalist said Axenrot refused to get vaccinated, leading his situation to cause "issues with travel and touring."
As of this writing, Opeth has not confirmed whether Holmes' statement is true or not.
