K. Michelle's presence has been missed on VH1's hit Love And Hip-Hop: Atlanta this season but not to worry, she's returning to the network with her forthcoming musical.
According to BET, the Memphis singer will star in her own special later this month.
The network's site reports that Rebellious Soul: K Michelle the Musical will center on nine tracks from the outspoken songstress' debut album including "When I Get a Man," "Hate on Her," "V.S.O.P." and "Can't Raise a Man."
Directed by Golden Globe-nominated actor Idris Elba, Rebellious Soul will air as a 30-minute "hip hopera."
UrbanDaily reports K explained how the project came to be during an interview with WGCI in Chicago. She called the musical a "female 'Trapped in the Closet."
"My album, Rebellious Soul, we turned it into a musical ... it's on VH1 and Idris Elba is the director. [...] I took every song on Rebellious Soul and turned it into a conversation and flipped it kind of like a female 'Trapped in the Closet' [by R. Kelly]. I turned the whole album around, Idris heard it. Loved it. And we decided to team up on it. VH1 will air it. I didn't want to make it this celebrity thing. Me and him decided we really wanted it to be focused on the story and fun and laugh and cry. People have been talking to me about a lot of acting roles, but this will be my first time being on the screen."
Back in 2005, R. Kelly captivated fans with the release of his Trapped in the Closet series which went on to release 33 chapters.
In 2001, Beyonce starred in Carmen: A Hip Hopera, a musical film produced for television by MTV. Mekhi Phifer starred as her love interest.
Rebellious Soul: K Michelle the Musical is slated to air on VH1 Aug. 19 at 10 p.m.
