YG just released his new album "I Got Issues," and it includes a song that raised a lot of eyebrows called "How To Rob A Rapper," especially when rapper PnB Rock was killed during a robbery three weeks prior to its release.
The 32-year-old rapper shed light on the violence that rappers experience, rapping: "Peep game, I'ma teach you how to rob a rapper / Catch a n***a lackin', he slackin' on IG Live / He gon' show his whereabouts on accident, he be high / He gon' show the jewels he wearin' and the car that he drive."
The lyrics are somewhat a callout to what happened in PnB Rock's case wherein he had a meal with his girlfriend, and was fatally shot outside the restaurant.
Some alleged that the reason behind the attack was because his girlfriend posted their location on Instagram, which was later debunked by police reports.
However, fans think that the song was released at such an awkward time, and called out YG and Def Jam, his label, reports say. This has left many wondering when did the rapper write and record the song.
Bad Timing
YG, born Keenon Dequan Ray Jackson, is known to rap about various topics that are controversial. According to reports, he has been doing it since he released "My Krazy Life," his debut studio album.
Although PnB Rock's passing is not the only instance wherein a rapper was attacked during a robbery, it has left a mark in Hip Hop history and has unnerved many rappers.
Several expressed their frustrations, with others saying that being a rapper is a dangerous job. Fat Joe described rappers as an "endangered species" in an interview.
Fans pointed out that the timing of "How To Rob A Rapper" is horrible, and added that it should have been taken out of the album altogether.
However, some fans don't see it the same way. They noted that the song is a "cautionary tale for rappers" and it is somewhat like a nod to 50 Cent's "How To Rob."
"That YG how to rob a rapper is really for rappers. Listen to learn, not to be offended, [sic]" a fan tweeted.
YG collaborated with Mozzy D3szn for "How To Rob A Rapper," and the music video has garnered over 300 thousand views and a thousand comments as of this writing.
