Ellie Goulding has eliminated ballads from her forthcoming album. Popular love songs by the 35-year-old pop diva include "Still Falling For You" from the "Bridget Jones's Baby" album and "Love Me Like You Do" from the racy romantic comedy "Fifty Shades of Grey."
However, the "Easy Lover" hitmaker has noted a shift in people's music preferences post-pandemic, with most preferring uplifting dance tunes - so fans can anticipate exactly that on her 2020 follow-up, "Brightest Blue."
She told the Wired section of the Daily Star newspaper at this week's BMI London Awards at The Savoy, where she received the BMI President's Award that after the pandemic, nobody appears to be into ballads at the moment. She said everyone has emerged from the lockdown all wanting something to dance to, so she wants to give them what they want with her new album.
Goulding has just announced a forthcoming collaboration with Sigala and Alok titled "All By Myself," which borrows the 1990s classic "Enjoy the Silence" by electronic pioneers Depeche Mode. Recently, the "I Need Your Love" hitmaker remarked of her return to her electronic dance-pop beginnings. She said she spent a great deal of time by myself, being contemplative.
She also had a backlog of topics I wished to cover. The whole experience was quite profound and emotional for her. And this record is the exact opposite. She discovered this perfect team of writers who, for whatever reason, were all on the same page without having to discuss it. She said they were all on this assignment solely for amusement.
They simply want to provide music for people to dance to and let them forget about the past year. Ellie Goulding believes that she appreciates the new difficulties that TikTok and streaming have brought to the music industry over the past decade.
Goulding was signed in 2009.
Since then, she has had eleven UK Top 10 singles and three UK number ones, and she acknowledges that the "entire climate of music" has changed, in part due to social media.
Goulding tells BBC Newsbeat that she quite appreciates the challenges. She added that what artists have to do as an artist today is not easy; all of them have to work at it." This week, the 35-year-old received the President's Award at the BMI Awards, which honor songwriters, composers, and music publishers. She said people tended to forget she can and she has composed her own music, and it feels great.
