Ahead of the release of The 1975's next album, "Being Funny in a Foreign Language," Matt Healy sat down with Apple Music's Zane Lowe for an interview, where he revealed his heroin addiction and road to recovery.
"The heroin thing was a problem," Healy said, "because it was the first time where there had been anything that one of us was doing or was into that the others weren't."
He further explained that the rest of The 1975 were not interested in using heroin, while he was "for some reason."
"It was the first time that the idea of a secret existing even came out. It's almost as if, like, is there anything else that we've not known? Because that's a big thing," he continued.

Rehab
The vocalist explained that the band called him out to tell him that he was not in the same mindset as the rest of them, and it was affecting the rest of them.
And while he attempted to defend himself, he later realized that it was the wrong thing to say, "that was so cringe, [sic]" he added.
While Healy did not disclose how long it took him to get help and enter rehab following that confrontation, he shared his experience in rehab.
He further explained that he saw people in rehab who had lost everything, which made him reflect that he had not lost anything yet.
"I'd nearly lost the respect of everybody I loved, but I hadn't. Hadn't lost my career. Hadn't lost my possessions. Hadn't lost my money. I was just walking a very, very thin line," he said.
"I think that I was lucky enough in my condition in the way that I am as a person to recognize that what needed to be done needed to be done."
Fans React
The interview was recorded and uploaded on YouTube, which now has over 29,000 views and 150 comments as of this writing.
The revelation about both his addiction and other topics which were discussed in the interview like reaching milestones with The 1975, arts, culture, identity, and more surprised a lot of fans. They had mixed reactions.
"If you only follow Matty's instagram stories it's almost odd to hear him being this earnest [LOL], but the truth is he's always been a genuine guy and a super authentic artist," a fan wrote. "This interview was so great specially cause you can never run out of things to talk about with Matty. He's such a profound reflective and empathetic person, it's really beautiful to watch. [...]"
"Matty really manifested the bands success, way before people were really into manifestation and taking a vision of your future and running with it.
"He's original and he 100% is a genius because he applies his intelligence to making a change and breaking through the cultural normal. He started a revolution like just look at his lyrics and the way he discusses politics, and society, and raw emotion. He just owns it all," another commented.
The 1975 began in Cheshire but is now based in Manchester, which has become a sort of inspiration for the band and their music.
Healy talked about how difficult it was to establish themselves in the new location, especially in Manchester.
"People talk about following in the footsteps of giants or standing on the shoulder of them while we're talking about Oasis. [...] No, what it means is stand in their footsteps for a minute and then take footsteps of your own on that path. [sic]"
"Being Funny In A Foreign Language" is expected to be released on Oct. 14.
