Back in 2019, Lil Durk was accused of attempting to commit murder, along with other charges including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and association with a criminal street gang.
This comes after a shooting incident in Atlanta outside a restaurant called The Varsity. A fellow rapper, King Von, both appeared in court as they were charged by a Fulton County judge, reports say. Von has since passed away in November 2020.
Over three years later, the charges against the rapper have been dropped, WSB-TV reports.
"While it took three years for the state to make the right decision, in the end, the right decision was made and Mr. Banks can finally put this event behind him," said Durk's attorney, Manny Arora.
Durk, born Durk Banks, turned himself in the moment he found out a warrant was issued for his arrest.
"I have nothing to hide. I have nothing to run from," he said back in May 2019. "We found out we had a warrant actually while on tour. Once I heard, I immediately came back."
'Prosecutorial Discretion'
According to reports, a Dismissal of Charges Motion was issued by Georgia's Superior Court of Fulton County, and it reads: "the facts of this case have been reviewed and, although it appears that probable cause existed for the defendant's arrest, the decision of the District Attorney at this time is not to prosecute."
Fani Willis, the District Attorney in the case, cited "prosecutorial discretion" as the reason behind the cleared-out charges.
It seems like the rapper is indeed not guilty of the crimes accused of him, as he proclaimed his innocense since the beginning.
He even released a song entitled "Turn Myself In," about his experience and legal situation.
A line from the song was telling, as he rapped, "false accusation, why they name droppin'?"
Lil Durk is the lead member and founder of Only The Family, a collective and record label. In 2013, he entered a joint venture deal with Def Jam Recordings.
He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, twice in 2020 and once in 2022. His song with Drake, "Laugh Now Cry Later" was nominated for best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. In 2022, Kanye West's 'Donda," in which he is a featured artist, was nominated for Album of the Year.
