Taylor Swift has officially broken the record for most albums sold in a week.

Taylor Swift cannot stop breaking records. Her album Midnights was released on October 21st. The second the clock struck twelve, Swifties around the world pulled a reverse Cinderella: the world came to life and the music of Midnights filled every crevice of the music world. The album is an undisputed sensation, and it continues to climb. The iconic album has officially broken the record for most albums sold in a week. Over one million albums of Midnights were sold in the opening week. This beats out the record for an LP that was previously set by Adele back in 2015 with her album 25.

This is not the first record that Taylor Swift has broken with the iconic album. She sold over 1 million units of the record within the first week as well, beating out a record that was previously held by...well, Taylor Swift. Back in 2017, her iconic album Reputation moved over 1.2 million units in a week. By Wednesday of the week after the release of Midnights, we knew that this record was sure to be blown out of the water by this late night hour.

According to an article in the New York Times, the insane numbers we are seeing in album releases are largely to do with the rise in streaming music, however, that cannot account for all of it. The article read:

"In a year of many disappointing releases, with albums by Drake, Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar and other big names posting surprisingly low numbers, Swift promoted her release cleverly online, with cheeky TikTok videos and drip-drip revelations, and advertised an array of product variations that got fans reaching for their credit cards."

Also, it's fanatstic.

Congratulations Taylor Swift!
