Eminem is considered one of the greatest rappers of all time. He was instrumental in popularizing the rap and hip-hop genre in Middle America, coming from Missouri.
The 50-year-old MC is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 220 million records worldwide.
Earlier this year, he was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022. Eminem, being a notable hip-hop artist, has sparked controversy on his eligibility and subsequent induction into the coveted hall of fame.
Rock Hall, however, came into defense, noting how Rock and Roll essentially birthed the hip-hop genre and how it is encompassing among other genres.
Like Eminem, Country music icon Dolly Parton's induction also brewed conversations about her unlikely induction too, coming from the Country category.
During his speech, last night at the Microsoft Theatre, Eminem, now officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, delivered a speech that perfectly summarized his relationship with drugs in 2007.
At the time, Eminem was addicted to various substances - leading to his addiction and eventual drug overdose. Earlier this year, the "Godzilla" rapper revealed in a podcast his near-death experience after his almost-fatal overdose. (via Page Six)
In his speech, Eminem recalled the encounter again: "I almost died from an overdose in 2007, which kind of sucked."
He then turned everyone's attention to her daughter Hailie Mathers, who was in the audience accompanying him.
"Hailie, plug your ears. Because drugs were f-king delicious. I thought we had a good thing going on, but I had to go and f-k it all up. Goddamn," he recalled, prompting laughter from the crowd.
In the interview with SiriusXM's Shade45, Eminem, along with his longtime manager Paul Rosenberg, reminisced about the aftermath of the rapper's withdrawal from drugs in 2007.
"You literally were coming off of an overdose, and they had to sort of stabilize you with a few medications. And some of them took you a minute to adjust to - let's just leave it at that," Rosenberg shared at the time.
With the addiction already resolved, Eminem couldn't help but be grateful for standing at the Rock Hall and being inducted.
"And finally, I had to really fight my way through man to try and breakthrough in this music, and I'm so honoured and I'm so grateful that I'm even able to be up here doing hip-hip music, man, because I love it so much," he gushed.
Eminem is now a Tony Award away from achieving EGOT Status, having received an Emmy Award this year after his successful performance at the NFL Superbowl Halftime Show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige.
