In his early beginnings, BoB played the trumpet in his school band starting from elementary until high school. Initially, his parents wanted him to pursue his education, but he said he wanted to pursue a music career. Later on, his father eventually approved of this after realizing that his talented son is using music as his therapy and his very own creative outlet.
"They've always supported me. They got my first keyboard to make beats on and they helped me out getting equipment here and there. But it was kind of hard for them to really understand what I was really trying to accomplish," he said in an interview with HiphopDX.

And I thought I thought I wanted to retire. Sometimes it is certain toxic people in your circle that is ruining sh-," he shared. "All I had to do was remove the irritation, and then everything else works out. D***, I do love music. I do. I love making music," said B.o.B. "I have a great job, man. Start to realize all these things. You got to go through fire. It's a story. It's going to be one hell of a biopsy [biopic]."
