Paul McCartney helped say goodbye to one of America's most legendary venues with a 40-song setlist on Thursday night, and San Francisco's Candlestick Park is now set for implosion after its final event.
Known mostly for its sports history (the stadium hosted the NFL's 49ers and MLB's Giants), Candlestick has also held several significant events, including mass with Pope John Paul II in 1987, and The Beatles' last show on their final tour in 1966.
Thursday night, McCartney shared a never-before-seen photo from that show.
Check it out:
Jim Marshall snapped the photograph as the Beatles prepared to step onstage before a sell-out crowd. CBS reports that the band had to use the visitor's locker room (as opposed to the Giants' locker room).
"They didn't trust the Beatles," tour director Amanda Tugwell said. "They didn't even trust the Pope."
Nearly 50 years later, McCartney returned to bid farewell to the West Coast gem, which holds a special place in thousands of peoples' hearts.
Former 49ers player Ronnie Lott summed it up thusly:
"In my life, I believe that you pay your respects at the end of someone's life," Lott said. "And you pay them because of what they stand for. This place stands for a lot."
