Swedish supergroup ABBA surprised the world in 2021 when they released their comeback album, "Voyage," four decades after the release of their last album in 1981.
They proved why they are one of the biggest and best-selling groups in music history, right after The Beatles and Queen, with 11.3 million total combined sales.
According to reports, ABBA's long-awaited comeback earned them Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year for "Don't Shut Me Down," Album of the year for "Voyage."
"Don't Shut Me Down" was also nominated for Best Best Pop Duo / Group performance, while "Voyage" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album.
In 2022, "I Still Have Faith in You" was nominated for Record of the Year, but lost to Silk Sonic's "Leave The Door Open," reports noted.
Grammy Snub?
Despite ABBA's massive international success in the 70s and 80s, the group is actually yet to win a Grammy Award.
However, that does not mean that there is a lack of awards and accolades under the group's belt.
In 1981, the American Guild of Variety Artists Entertainer of The Year Awards honored them as Vocal Group of the Year.
From 1974 to 1982, the group bagged several awards from the Bravo Otto Awards. It is an award presented by Bravo magazine, based in Germany.
During the 1977 Brit Awards, their "Arrival" album was nominated for Best International Single and LP; and ABBA was nominated yet again in 2022 for Best International Group.
Can They Still Win?
With decades of music and experience, one would think that ABBA receiving a Grammy Award is a no-brainer, however, since the music landscape is a lot different now from the 70s to 80, this might prove to be a little difficult for the supergroup.
According to Britannica, Grammy Award winners are voted by academy members, and although not much is known about the demographic of the members, one can only deduce that it will be a mix of ages.
This is what might cost ABBA their Grammy Award. According to reports, the group may stand out as nominees, but with the influx of newer and younger artists included in the roster, ABBA might struggle with earning the members' votes.
However, fans are still hopeful that the group will bag at least one of their nominated awards.
"They better win, 'Voyage' came out at the end of the year and was the best-selling album of the year that should tell you something about how legendary and iconic they are, even after a 40-year hiatus," a fan wrote.
"Wouldn't it be so fantastic if they won..so amazing. But, even if they don't, the fact that they came back after 40 years is such an accomplishment and all 4 members recorded this album while in their seventies....again AMAZING. Love ABBA. Can't wait for the awards," another added.
