Lewis Capaldi said a collaboration with Ed Sheeran is not something he wants - at least not to be the first track to signal his comeback.
He added that Sheeran pitched some lyrics to a song that he was supposed to sing but he could not take it.
Lewis Capaldi Says Ed Sheeran Understands Where He's Coming From
The "Forget Me" hitmaker is preparing to release his new single "Pointless," which he co-wrote with the "Bad Habits" singer.
While he's really pleased of the song, he didn't want a certain label attached to it if it was the first track off his upcoming album.
He stated to Music Week, "I think he's the best British songwriter of the last 20 years, but I had reservations about putting out a Sheeran co-write as the first song because it would be portrayed as 'Ed Sheeran wrote my first single back' and I didn't want that to be the takeaway."
He said Sheeran knew exactly what he meant and understood. The song is anticipated to be published as a single soon, and Lewis has explained how it came together. He elaborated by saying, "I went into the studio with Johnny McDaid and Steve Mac and at the end of the first day they said, 'We wrote this verse with Ed, but we couldn't think of a chorus to save our lives, do you want to have a look?' So he listened to it, interpreted the chorus and middle eight, and the song came together nicely.
Lewis Thinks Ed Sheeran's Pitch Lyrics Are Outdated
Lewis previously disclosed that he altered the lyrics of the song, which will appear on his forthcoming second studio album 'Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent,' because he believed they were out of date.
Sheeran reportedly suggested the following lyric: "She gives me more than everything, I'll give her my last name," but the Scottish singer felt it wasn't right to sing about a woman getting the surname of the man she'll marry - as if women are just waiting to bestowed with such a gift. She said it is not right to assume that the woman would automatically change her surname to her husband's last name when they get married.
Since he cannot stand the presumption, they took it out. He even told Sheeran why. He said: "I was like, 'Ed, this is 2022. No-one has to take anyone's second name. I'm not singing that!' He added that he does not believe that even Ed's wife has his last name.
