The recent fiasco surrounding Taylor Swift's "The Eras" tour revealed a shocking investigation involving Live Nation Entertainment.
The Department of Justice reportedly started investigating Live Nation Entertainment before the recent "botched" ticket sales for Swift's upcoming tours. The New York Times (via Forbes and Deadline) confirmed the development and detailed that the probe is an antitrust inquiry.
The news outlet disclosed that the Department of Justice received tips from unnamed sources regarding the company's alleged abuse in the live entertainment industry. It will reportedly reveal whether or not the company has used its current standing and market power in its live event business.
It clarified that the investigation started before the "The Eras" tour fiasco, which led Swifties to call out the company and also urge the authorities to investigate the matter.
Capitol Hill's lawmakers offered a similar sentiment, and have continuously called for a close examination of the company's works and practices.
The recent fiasco in Swift's ticket sales intensified the investigation, but Live Nation and Ticketmaster have yet to respond to the probe.
Live Nation has been put under a consent decree following its merger with Ticketmaster in 2010. It was extended in 2019 to continue for 5 ½ years after the Department of Justice previously found out that the company violated the restrictions placed on the merger.
Taylor Swift Breaks Her Silence Over Ticketmaster Mess
Amid the issues surrounding "The Eras" tour ticket sales, Swift expressed how disappointed she feels due to "several bear attacks" while trying to obtain tickets.
On her Instagram Story, as quoted by NME, Swift showed her protective side and said she is pissed off and upset with the recent events.
"We've been doing this for decades together, and over the years, I've brought so many elements of my career in house. I've done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans' experience by doing it myself with my team who care as much about my fans as I do," she said.
Swift also said it is difficult for her to trust an "outside entity" with regard to this. She noted it has been excruciating for her to watch the same fiasco repeatedly without seeing an improvement.
On the other hand, CEO of Liberty Media Greg Maffei told CNBC that bot attacks happened during the presale, leading to a "historically unprecedented demand."
