The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. This morning Spotify released 2022 Spotify Wrapped.
While we can spend our time debating the pros and cons of Spotify Wrapped, on the day of its release, it is definitely a bit more fun just to put our potential objections and qualms aside to just engage with the culture.
Every year, there are some things that we know to consistently expect from Spotify wrapped. We see the stats on our favorite songs of the year, our favorite artists, our favorite genres, the usual things. However, each year, Spotify finds a new way to keep things interesting and exicitng.
There are a few new sections that have been added to this year's Spotify Wrapped. Each one gives a peak into the personality of the listener based on Spotify data. Each section has the Twittersphere perplexed in new and incredibly entertaining ways.
1. My Audio Day
One of the first sections that they have is My Audio Day. In My Audio Day, Spotify breaks down your overall vibe for morning, noon, and night based on the songs you were listening to at that time. However, these are not all normal vibes. Some people have gotten some pretty interesting phrases.
One Twitter user posted saying that their My Audio Day read, "Passionate French Cafe Goblincore." The user aptly tweeted out the picture alongside the fitting words, "WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN!" Others similarly got eclectic phrases such as, "Yearning Wistful Cottagecore." This year's Spotify unwrapped is certainly leaning on the more whimsical side as far as language goes, and we are HERE for it.
However, there is some drama surrounding the My Audio Day slide on this year's Spotify Wrapped. The drama is that not everyone seems to have gotten such a slide, and people are not happy about it. People have taken to the platform to lament the missing piece of their Spotify Wrapped. Some are making dark jokes including one user who posted, "My Spotify Wrapped does not have the Your Audio Day Slide is actually my 13th reason."
Another user took to the platform lamenting, "the fact that i thought I was having a good day when Spotify Wrapped came out but now I know I don't have the 'my audio day' slide and my day is ruined." This seems to be a problem that many Spotify users around the world are facing. We will see if the company makes a statement as to why the various slides are missing.
2. My Listening Personality
Another exciting new feature on this year's Spotify Wrapped is My Listening Personality. My Listening Personality is a slide that takes its cue from the Myers Briggs personality type test. With this, however, instead of determining whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, the slide shows you your listening personality, giving you a series of four letters that summarize the vibe that your music tastes of the year have shown you to be.
On this slide, listeners find out more of their personal inclinations when it comes to music. Are you someone that listens to the same songs and artists over and over again? Are you someone who is determined to listen to every new song the second it comes out? Are you someone who does everything in their power to make sure that they are listening to something that no one else is listening to? This slide will tell you exactly that.
The My Listening Personality section is broken up into four sections, each section having two potential descriptive words. The options are Familiarity or Exploration, Timelessness or Newness, Loyalty or Variety, and Commonality or Uniqueness. Each of these come together to tell you what your music personality type is.
There are sixteen possible outcomes for your Listening Personality. They are The Adventurer, The Early Adopter, The Deep Diver, The Devotee, The Replayer, The Connoisseur, The Maverick, The Fan Clubber, The Top Charter, The Enthusiast, The Time Traveler, The Musiciologist, The Nomad, The Voyager, The Jukeboxer, and The Specialist. People have been coming out in droves to share their results. For more on all of the different potential Listening Personalities, read more here.
3. The Percentages
But of course, while the new sections come and go, one of the most exciting to see is always those that find themselves in or under the 0.5% of listeners for their favorite artists. This is a point of pride for many and a point of derision for others. One Twitter user posted a picture of Nancy distraught during an episode of Stranger Things and captioned the tweet writing, "WTF DO YOU MEAN I'M IN THE TOP 0.5% OF ALL GLEE LISTENERS GLOBALLY??"
Others are taking a moment to stake their claim to the assertion that they are their favorite artist's number on fan. One user who was in the Top 0.5% of listeners for Beyonce tweeted, "I'm in the top 0.5% of Beyonce listeners that means I get free floor tickets to renaissance world tour right?????"
However, while some are boasting about their status in the top 0.5% of listeners, others are coming in triumphant after learning that they are in the top 0.001% of listeners for their favorite stars. One Twitter user posted out a picture of the minutes she spent listening to singer Olivia Rodrigo writing, "0.5% is trending? How about 0.001%."
It is important to remember that this is not actually a competition, but what can we say? Competition certainly does make things a bit more interesting!
No matter what your Spotify stats told you about yourself, we are all in for a thrilling day of scrolling through the taste in music of everyone you know. Unless, of course, you are one of the two people not on Spotify. In that case...well, carry on with your very normal day?
Happy listening everyone!
