Too Short has been working in the music industry for over 40 years now and he is now considered a legend in the hip-hop music scene. After bringing honor to his hometown of Oakland, the city will be naming a street after him.
According to Uproxx, the "Too Short Street" will be located at the Foothill Boulevard between 47th Avenue and High Street.
The rapper took to his official Instagram account to share the announcement, revealing that there will be a ceremony on December 10.
The commemorative renaming was initiated by the Oakland City Council and requested by Mayor Libby Schaff and Councilman Noel Gallo. Several friends of the rapper also wanted the street renaming to happen.
Per Mercury News, the "Too Short Street" will span across the Fremont High campus, a taco truck, a community swimming pool, and many more. Street signs are expected to be installed along Foothill Boulevard.
Why Is Too Short Getting a Street Named After Him?
One of the main reasons why the rapper is getting recognition is because of the honor he brought to the city. Born Todd Anthony Shaw, the rapper grew up in Oakland as a teenager, but he was previously based in Los Angeles.
Before amassing the fame and success that he has today, the hip-hop artist used to sell cassettes on the streets of East Oakland with the promise of giving a shoutout to the people who bought his music on his next project.
Noel Gallo further explained that Oakland should recognize him not only for his talent and contributions but also for the sake of "honoring and respecting those who have come before us and given back to the city."
The councilman also shared a story of Too Short in the 80s when he was starting out in the industry, saying he would often go to the Oakland Unified School District's TV station to perform to "get his name out."
Too Short Is Not The First Hip-Hop Artist to Get a Big Honor
The rapper isn't the only artist in the music industry to receive this kind of big honor as Missy Elliott also had a street named after her earlier this year.
Called the "Missy Elliott Boulevard," City Council members of Portsmouth approved that they should honor the Grammy Award-winning artist by naming the boulevard after her name. (via Pilot Online)
The main reason why they did this is because of her accomplishments as a music icon and because the city was the place where her career started.
