SZA is finally releasing "SOS," the follow-up to her successful debut album after a five-year-long wait, and looks like she really thought this through-but what she did not expect was the artists she invited to collab with her would ghost her!
In an interview with Hot 97, a New York radio station, the "Shirt" singer revealed that she was in "DMs and like begging people" to work with her because "sometimes people turn in their verses and sometimes they don't."
Of course, people now know which artists turned in their verses, thanks to SZA releasing the tracklist a few days ago.
According to reports, the 23-track list included songs featuring Travis Scott, Phoebe Bridgers, Don Toliver, and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard.
But apparently, there were supposed to be more artists featured on the album: "A lot of people just like did not turn in their verses, but I'm grateful for who did."
And while her supposed collaborators ghosted her, SZA understands that she can't hold it against them.
"But also, in the same token, it's like, 'Damn this sucks, I really needed you. I wish you showed up for me'," she said. "But I'm sure they felt the same way for me."
Collaborators
On the other hand, some of her collaborators have even worked with her before, like Scott, who has worked with the R&B singer before. According to Rolling Stone, Scott appeared on "Open Arms" while Toliver on "Used," which SZA greatly appreciates.
"I really appreciate that he's just a consistent friend in my life and really believes in me as an artist," SZA said about Scott.
A name not commonly associated with the R&B genre, Bridgers, also made it to SZA's highly anticipated album.
"I'm grateful Phoebe showed up for me, I didn't think she would come to the studio in person. She did, which is crazy. We laughed, it's just hilarious."
Fans took to social media to speculate on which artists the "Broken Clocks" singer invited to work with her, including Ariana Grande, Beyonce, and Frank Ocean.
Some fans pointed out that she admitted how she also did not turn in her verses for their songs, which was only fair trade, meanwhile, other fans were glad that SZA had more solo songs on the album.
SZA's collab with other artists, however, is worth noting, as most of them have performed very well commercially and on charts, including Rihanna's "Consideration," "What Lovers Do" with Maroon 5, and Doja Cat's "Kiss Me More."
"SOS" comes out on Dec. 9 through Top Dawg Entertainment and RCA Records. She has released three singles from the album as of this writing.
