Elton John is quitting Twitter, and it might be the reason why you think it is.
In the past few months, the public has expressed their detestation and calls for a boycott after it was helmed by a new management - the controversial buyout of Elon Musk on the popular social media platform.
While many leave because of how the platform is expected to go bonkers after the departure of its many software engineers, Elton John has a rather definitive reason why he would stop using the app anymore.
For the music icon, he believes the platform will now be used to prople misinformation to the masses, because of its new leadership.
"All my life I've tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world," he said in a tweet. "I've decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked."
The recent change in policy that Elton might be referencing to is the fast-tracking of the process of being verified on the platform. With as low as $8, people can avail of the blue check mark - signifying that the user is a verified one.
The issue of earning a title might not be the problem per se, but it was the credibility and reliability that one possess once verified.
But according to Rolling Stone, it might also be connected on the newly-released memo of the platform - that they will stop enforcing its longstanding COVID-19 misinformation policy.
"Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy," the note from the platform reads.
Since January 2020, more than 11,000 twitter accounts were suspended for spreading COVID-19 misinformation on the feed.
Musk has sparked backlash after allegedly overworking Twitter users to overhaul the current landscape of the platform, fitting to Musk's needs.
He has also sparked a massive amount of backlash after reinstating former President Donald Trump, who had been notorious of spewing hate speech and misinformation, and Kanye West, who had been on a free spree of antisemitism remarks in teh past few months.
As for Elton, he is busy preparing for his final act - Glastonbury Festival 2023!
