Native American Rapper Supaman Gains Traction On Social Media

Supaman is taking social media by storm and creating quite a name for himself.

Chris Parrish, better known as Supaman, is an Apsaalooke (Crow) Nation rapper.

According to TheGrio, his claim to fame has been his unique blend of rap with traditional Native American costume and pow-wow dancing.

Parrish was featured as Artist of the Week on MTV's 'Iggy' blog back in March but his love for hip-hop is nothing new. He says similarities between his youth and the things discussed in hip-hop drew him to that particular style of music.

"Native Americans grasp that culture of hip-hop because of the struggle." He told NPR in 2011. "Hip-hop was talking about the ghetto life, poverty, crime, drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy; all that crazy stuff that happens in the ghetto is similar to the reservation life. We can relate to that."

Parrish says despite his hardships, hip-hop helped him imagine a better life. Growing up in foster homes estranged from his alcoholic parents, music became a way out.

"We would play the part, you know. We were wannabes, trying to be, like, these rappers on the rez," he said. "So we started doing the crime, robbing, went into houses and trade the merchandise and then get weed from the merchandise, and then started selling."

He was lucky enough to catch the attention of a record label in Seattle. He began touring shortly thereafter.

As of late, the performance artist Facebook page "Supaman" has gotten 7,545 likes, and his personal page "Christian Parrish" has 8,340 followers.
