The Victorian tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is about to be retold on Broadway, and the principal cast is already announced.
The third Broadway revival of the Award-winning musical is led by Broadway veterans like Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, among an ensemble of other famous actors and singers. (via Broadway World)
Playing the titular role of Sweeney Todd is "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812" alum Josh Groban. The role, which Groban originates from Len Cariou, is a serious character contender that would finally give Groban the Tony Award he rightfully deserves.
Opposite to Todd is Mrs. Lovett, originated by the late Angela Lansbury, Tony-winning actress Annaleigh Ashford will now take on the role of the beloved slatternly widow of Fleet Street.
"Dear Evan Hansen" alums Jordan Fisher and Gaten Matarazzo will also be staging a comeback on Broadway after their shortlived stints on the Tony-winning musical. Fisher will play Anthony Hope, while Matarazzo will be playing Tobias Ragg.
Australian Actor Jamie Jackson will star as Judge Turpin, Maria Bilbao as Johanna Barker, and Tony-winning actress Ruthie Ann Miles plays the Beggar Woman. Nicholas Christopher and John Rapson shall be playing Adolfo Pirelli and Beadle Bamford, respectively.
An ensemble of award-winning production also helms the backseat of the whole revival production, "Hamilton's" Thomas Kail and Alex Lacamoire will be directing and supervising the music, respectively, while Olivier winner Steven Doggett is in charge of the choreography. Mimi Lien's set design and Emilio Sosa's costume design will also be featured.
Broadway veterans Natasha Katz and Nevin Steinberg will be helming the lights and sounds too.
According to Playbill, the "Sweeney Todd" 2023 revival production will feature Jonathan Tunick's full, 26-piece orchestration for the first time on Broadway since the original production - to be helmed by Alex Lacamoire.
The Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is set to serve its first fresh set of pies at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre starting Feb. 26, 2023, with the official opening night set for Mar. 26, 2022.
"Sweeney Todd" is famously based on the Christopher Bond play of the same title. It centers the story on the barber, Sweeney Todd, who is seeking revenge on the corrupt judge he is trying to murder, thanks to the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Lovette, who can ultimately serve the evidence on her fresh pies sold all over London.
