Gunna will have his ultimate Christmas gift earlier than expected - freedom from jail!
After staying in jail for almost seven months, rapper Gunna will finally be released from jail before his trial starts on January 2023.
Gunna was among the many associates of the Young Slime Life Records who were indicted and was subsequently arrested around May 2022 after a sweeping grand jury indictment was served.
According to Rolling Stone, Gunna, formally known as Sergio Kitchens, will be released from prison after taking a plea deal for his RICO Act violation charge.
Per the rapper's lawyers, Kitchens will be taking what is legally called an "Alford plea." For others, it may be referred to as the "best interest" plea, where the accused person maintains their innocence of the alleged crime while accepting the plea and repercussions of the same guilty verdict.
Per WSB-TV, Gunna is sentenced to five years in prison. However, his one year will be commuted to the time he has already spent in jail already. Meaning his remaining four years were also suspended, but reports also say he will be subjected to special conditions, including 500-hour community service.
Contrary to reports circulating, Gunna did not throw his gang under the bus.
"While I have agreed to always be truthful, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have NOT made any statements, have NOT been interviewed, have NOT cooperated, have NOT agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case and have absolutely NO intention of being involved in the trial process in any way," he said.
In the span of almost seven months, an online campaign called #FreeGunna has been launched on social media, with Gunna's fans, including members of the hip-hop community and even social media personalities like Kim Kardashian, have joined the call to free Gunna.
Meanwhile, in his plea statement, Gunna said that after joining YSL in 2016, he did not consider the group a "gang" but more of a "group of people from metro Atlanta who had common interests and artistic aspirations. My focus of YSL was entertainment - rap artists who wrote and performed music that exaggerated and 'glorified' urban life in the Black community."
Meanwhile, Young Thug, another rapper who is included in the grand jury indictment along with Gunna, is still in prison. As of this writing, news about his release is not yet available.
