Shania Twain opened up about the "very low period of [her] life," revealing that both her personal life and career suffered after her ex-husband cheated on her.

"It took a lot of working through, but I do believe that everyone's got to do what is right for them," Twain told People magazine.

She also added how despite the cuts her ex, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, left behind, she now leads "such a wonderful life" after her divorce from him.

"I found peace a long time ago, and maybe peace is forgiveness, you know? I'm able to have more appreciation for him again, not for what happened in our marriage but for all that he contributed to such a great part of my career and my life. We have a beautiful child from it. The resentment is gone."

'Renaissance Period'

According to reports, Lange had an affair with the singer's friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud, which resulted at the end of their marriage.

However, after that betrayal, Twain found solace in Marie-Anne's ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, with whom she is now happily married.

"That is a really strong bond that builds over time, that is rare, that you don't have in every relationship if you don't have those deep scars in common," Twain continued.

While her personal life has gotten much better, her career is just taking off once again. After her split with Lange, Twain struggled to find independence as an artist after working with Lange on her music for so long.

"I was able to recover as a singer, I was able to work through the fear of working without Mutt. I was able to work through finding my own independence again, as an artist, after being so long with a music partner," she said.

Her sixth studio album, "Queen of Me" is coming soon, and it is rooted in "renewed confidence" after healing from her ex's betrayal.

"It's like a renaissance period for me. To be experiencing it as a relevant artist still, that's rewarding," she explained.

"I feel a renewed confidence. I don't have anything to prove anymore, and I feel freedom in that."

Twain added that she did not appreciate how people viewed her as a "molded artist," referring to Lange's role in her career's success.

"This is not a man's world and it's not a woman's world. This is our world and we have to share it respectfully.

"But I will stand up for myself and I will tell you if I feel you've crossed the line."
