John Mayer has changed his ways-gone is the bad boy, womanizing, guitar-playing singer, and he attributes this huge change to six years of sobriety.
During his appearance at the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, the "Daughters" singer revealed that retreating from the limelight has immensely helped him get back on track and that his dating life is a lot more mellow than it used to be.
"Currently single," the singer confessed. "I don't date that much. I look at it like this: Dating is no longer a codified activity for me. It's not patterned anymore."
"I quit drinking like six years ago, so I don't drink anymore," he added. "I don't have the liquid courage."
Being sober has helped him become "glaringly honest" in relationships, he revealed, and it also made him realize that he can't avoid all his troubles with a bottle.
Some say this is Mayer's attempt of preempting the damage that Taylor Swift's "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" will cause to his image, but this isn't for certain.
As many are aware, the singer has quite a colorful dating history. He has been seen dating some of the industry's biggest names including Swift, Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston, and Jessica Simpson.
Despite being labeled as a "womanizer," however, he doesn't seem to mind too much: "That is what that is That's the role I play on the big TV show I didn't write, but that's fine. Maybe I had a hand in it or something," he added.
Red Flags
According to Buzzfeed, women linked to Mayer did not have a lot of nice words to say about him.
Swift wrote "Dear John," a reflective song about a toxic and manipulative partner. She dated Mayer when she was 19 years old, and he was 32.
He even described Swift's songwriting as "cheap" and "lousy," adding that the song dedicated to him made him feel "terrible."
"It was a really lousy thing to do. I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard."
Another ex-girlfriend, Simpson spoke out about Mayer after he talked about her in a degrading manner several years after they parted ways.
He said, "sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm."
Simpson reportedly said: "I hope he gets his life together."
And given his recent appearance and reflections about his sobriety and relationship, it looks like Mayer has finally seen the light, and had changed his ways.
