Wynonna Judd is thinking back to the last time she performed with her mother last year, before Naomi surprised the world on April 30, 2022, in her Tennessee home.
On the "Making Space With Hoda Kotb" podcast from the "Today" show, the other half of The Judds revealed that when they performed together at the CMT Awards in Nashville in April 2022, she saw some red flags that her mother wasn't in the proper frame of mind.
The crooner, 58, described her mother's manner, "She was fragile."
"I knew something wasn't right in terms of her being off a little bit, a bit nervous."
Wynonna felt her mother's anxiety when they sang their hit song, "Love Can Build A Bridge," together, she said.
"I think it's because she hadn't sung in a long time. And I think when our parents get older, their world gets smaller."
Wynonna, who also has a sister Ashley, continued, "And she was late (that night), and she is never late. I think she was nervous." She also stated that she was shocked to see Naomi Judd's vivid wig on stage.
She said that her initial reaction was to yank the woman's wig off rather than give her a hug or console her since their relationship was difficult and delicate, as she put it.
Due to the fact that both the "A Bad Goodbye" singer and her mother were strong-willed alphas who had a hard time being warm toward one another, their connection was problematic.
Finally, Wynonna expressed her gratitude for having one last opportunity to perform with Naomi.
"I'm glad I didn't stay stuck in my perfectionism is my point, I guess."
Naomi Judd passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound less than a month later. Despite her stardom, the well-known country singer fought a lengthy public battle with depression and anxiety.
Wynonna Judd's last words to her mother before she passed away were "I love you," and even after her death, she hasn't stopped communicating with her.
Sometimes, she would converse with her mother in her head, inquiring about various clothing possibilities. Other times, the conversation would get more serious and involve questions for which she lacked the solutions.
Naomi's status as Wynonna's "queen" and the fact that her mother was a "great composer" will live on in her memory forever.
