Ten months after drummer Taylor Hawkins' untimely death, the Foo Fighters have announced their first full concert without him.
The band led by Dave Grohl will headline the first night of the three-night Boston Calling festival at Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston, Massachusetts on May 26.
The Foos were scheduled to perform at the event in 2022, but canceled after Hawkins' death on March 25, 2022.
As of this time, no information has been disclosed regarding Hawkins' replacement behind the drums or the anticipated increase in Foo Fighters' live performances this year. Similarly, the significance of today's announcement was not mentioned in any promotional materials for Boston Calling.
Last September, the surviving members of Foo Fighters reunited twice to close out epic, star-studded tribute concerts for Taylor Hawkins in London and Los Angeles. At them, the band was supported by an assortment of drummer friends, including Rufus Taylor of Queen/the Darkness, Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, Queens of the Stone Age's Jon Theodore, session veteran Josh Freese, blink-182's Travis Barker, and even Hawkins' teenage son Shane.
Boston Calling also features King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Alanis Morissette (in her first Boston-area performance in more than a decade), Queens of the Stone Age, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the National, the Flaming Lips, Bleachers, Maren Morris, the reunited Walkmen, and Niall Horan in their only east coast appearances of the year.
In addition to Fletcher, the Linda Lindas, Genesis Owusu, and Joy Oladokun, the lineup also includes regional artists such as Neemz, Q-Tip Bandits, GA-20, Juice, Alisa Amador, and Mint Green. Thursday, January 12th, a variety of ticket configurations will be available on Boston Calling's website.
Metallica, the Strokes, and Nine Inch Nails were the headliners at last year's Boston Calling, with Nine Inch Nails filling in for the Foos. The festival was not held in 2020 or 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back in September 2022, Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at Wembley sent fans of the late Foo Fighters drummer through an emotional roller coaster. The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert became more of a celebration of the late drummer's legacy and influence on the rock genre, despite the concert's call to mourn the loss of an extraordinary life. Shane Hawkins, the son of Taylor Hawkins, stole the show by displaying the talent that his father has bestowed upon him, proving that he could follow in his musical footsteps.
It can be remembered that right after Nandi Bushell made her Wembley Stadium debut at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at the age of 12, the Foo Fighters brought out Rufus "Tiger" Taylor, a new drummer on the rotating list, that night. Rufus Tiger Taylor is the current drummer for The Darkness and tours with "Queen + Adam Lambert."
Taylor was, according to Dave Grohl, "a true member of the Foo Fighters" because they have known him since he was a child. The 31-year-old drummer joined the band to perform their hit songs "These Days" and "Best of You" to thunderous applause from the Wembley Stadium crowd. Rumors have it that he's the replacement, but until there's an official announcement, it's hard to not take it with a grain of salt.
