Did the Broken Heart Syndrome have something to do with Lisa Marie Presley's cardiac arrest and death?
Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley's mother, confirmed the news about the singer-songwriter's death in a statement on Thursday. The 54-year-old songstress died after being hospitalized earlier that day following a cardiac arrest.
"It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us," Priscilla wrote, per Associated Press. "She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known."
Following the confirmation, Lisa Marie Presley's health became the subject of baseless speculations. Fans immediately dismissed it by saying that Presley's family has a history of heart disease - as it was the same condition that took her father's life decades ago.
They also argued that her addiction to opioid painkillers in the past and her heartbreak after losing her son Benjamin probably played a role in her death. The then-27-year-old Benjamin died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2020.
Before her death, Presley still wrote an essay for "National Grief Awareness Day" in 2022 in which she opened up about the loss of her son.
With that, they said she probably suffered a broken heart syndrome, which probably led to her cardiac arrest.
Johns Hopkins Medicine explains that broken heart syndrome, also known as takotsubo syndrome or stress cardiomyopathy, occurs when a person suffers sudden acute stress. It then leads to the weakening of heart muscle at a very fast pace.
The website added that this could be triggered by two kinds of stress: emotional stressors and physical stressors.
The relationship between Presley's cardiac arrest and broken heart syndrome still has not been confirmed. But fans believe her past experiences triggered her heart disease.

While waiting for the EMTs, her ex-husband Danny Keough - who had just arrived at that time after taking their kids to school - performed CPR. Responders then gave her one epinephrine shot to gain her pulse before rushing her to a hospital.
Moments later, unnamed sources informed a news outlet that Presley was in the intensive care unit and was put on life support and medically induced coma. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead hours after her cardiac arrest.
