Last night, Taylor Swift announced her upcoming album, 1989, and debut her new single, "Shake It Off," with a Mark Romanek-directed video. The video features Swift joining in on different styles of dance such as ballet, interpretive, contemporary, breakdance, and twerking. The last two styles have gotten her into some hot water, however, with Earl Sweatshirt jumping on Twitter to criticize Swift's video for being "inherently offensive and ultimately harmful."
He wrote in series of tweets what he saw wrong with the video and how it appropriates a culture than Swift isn't part of.
"haven't watched the taylor swift video and I don't need to watch it to tell you that it's inherently offensive and ultimately harmful," he wrote. "perpetuating black stereotypes to the same demographic of white girls who hide their prejudice by proclaiming their love of the culture."
He continued: "for instance, those of you who are afraid of black people but love that in 2014 it's ok for you to be trill or twerk or say n***a."
It's worth pointing out that there are black dancers performing other styles of dance in the video, but does that matter?
Do you think the video was racist? Watch the video in question below and sound off in the comments section.
