Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is now considered one of the biggest girl anthems, but apparently, the lyrics weren't always as quirky and innocent.
The 69-year-old singer revealed in PBS' "Find Your Roots" how her most iconic song originally had lyrics quite different from the current: "Girls just want to have sex," but she wasn't having it.
"What am I supposed to do? Have a lobotomy, walk around and can-can?" She said jokingly.
The tacky lyrics left nothing to the imagination, which is probably why she decided to take it upon herself to change it.
"What it was about was the guy's version of - what do you think? 'Girls just want to have fun. Ain't we lucky? Nudge, nudge.'
"I was like, 'Yeah, girls just want to have sex - is that what the hell this is? Because I'm not doing this,'" she said with finality.
Lauper's song was released in 1983 and came with an accompanying music video.
The music video currently has 1.1 billion views, 5.5 million likes, and over 168,000 comments on YouTube.

Fun Facts
"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" may be one of Lauper's biggest hits, but the song wasn't always tied to her name.
In fact, singer-songwriter Robert Hazard was the genius behind the song. He released it in 1979, but it was later picked up and covered by the "Time After Time" singer a few years later.
Lauper's version is the most recognizable one, after all, it was nominated for Record of the year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards, and has been covered by several artists since she released it.
It was wildly successful on the charts as well. It peaked at No. 1 on several charts in the world like Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, Norway, and more; and it peaked at No. 2 in the United States and the United Kingdom.
While her most popular song might be a cover, Lauper is an accomplished songwriter. She has written for various artists like Billy Joel, Susanna Hoffs, The Hooters, and more.
Her career has spanned decades and is still as popular and relevant today as she was before.
According to Rollingstone, Lauper was roped in with country music superstar Dolly Parton and Gloria Estefan, along with Belinda Carlisle and Debbie Harry to work on a collab song, "Gonna Be You."
The song, written by Diane Warren, is to celebrate friendship and the talent of the singers.
"I wanted to write a song that celebrated these women's deep friendship," said Warren. "Since 80 was in the title I got a crazy idea, why not get some of the most iconic singers from the 80s, who are still amazing and always will be, to all sing it?"
The song, along with its accompanying music video, will be released in early February.
