The 2023 Oscar nominations were finally announced, and social media has been celebrating after some of their favorite actors, films, and directors were nominated by the prestigious award-giving body.
Among the most awaited categories, aside from the Best Picture and Best Actors categories, was the Best Original Song category, which is the only category on the Academy Awards that recognizes the incredible music weaved into the film.
According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, only five entries were nominated this year:
Best Original Song
- "Applause" from "Tell It Like a Woman" by Diane Warren
- "Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick" by Lady Gaga
- "Lift Me Up" from "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" by Rihanna
- "Naatu Naatu" from "RRR" by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava
- "This Is a Life" from "Everything Everywhere All at Once" by Son Lux, Mitski, and David Byrne
The turnout of the 2023 Oscar nominations was quite expected, as all of the successful nominees were predicted by publications months before.

However, one glaring snub from the Academy is Taylor Swift's "Carolina" from the film "Where The Crawdads Sing." Swifties expected that the song was a shoo-in for the category - only to find out that it was not included on the final list.
Swift's "Carolina" was included in the same category on the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, along with "Lift Me Up," "Hold My Hand," and Guillermo Del Torro's "Ciao Papa." But, it was "Naatu Naatu" who took home the award.
Now, at the 2023 Oscars, "Carolina" was left out of the mix, but other strong contenders like "Applause" from Diane Warren for "Tell It Like a Woman," and "This is A Life" from Son Lux, Mitski, and David Byrne for "Everything Everywhere All at Once."
Rihanna's "Lift Me Up" and Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand" was some sort of a deja vu for others. This is because the last time Lady Gaga was nominated for Oscars was when she won Best Original Song in 2018 for "Shallow," beating Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "All The Stars," which came from "Black Panther" prequel, where "Lift Me Up" came from.
Meanwhile, Diane Warren, a songwriter legend, has been nominated consecutively since 2016. If she takes home this year's award, she will earn her first competitive Academy Award.
