Taylor Swift's fans believed that the pop superstar's recent move to outshine John Mayer was not coincidental.
Swift hyped Swifties when she announced the release of the highly-anticipated music video for her "Midnights" song, "Lavender Haze." She shared the news on her Twitter and Instagram page, writing, "Meet me at midnight... ...for the Lavender Haze music video premiere (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)"
The post features someone sitting on a bed while smoke comes from all sides of the frame. The text "Meet me at midnight" also appears in the 8-second clip.
Fans had been waiting for that update from Swift. But they also noticed that the singer posted it 15 minutes after her ex-boyfriend, John Mayer, announced his solo tour 2023 dates.
The 45-year-old "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" crooner announced on Twitter that he would be playing old and newer songs. He also pledged to play never-before-heard songs he would be testing during the tour.
Mayer's show will start on March 11 in Newark and end on April 14 in Los Angeles. He will also visit Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Detroit, Nashville, Cleveland, Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, St. Paul, Denver, Phoenix, Palm Desert, Sacramento, Vancouver, and Seattle.
After seeing both posts, Swifties took to Twitter and praised Swift over her epic move to eclipse Mayer's announcement.
One said, "No WAY did Taylor Swift just announce the Lavender Haze vid after John Mayer dropped his tour announcement."
Taylor Swift, John Mayer's Relationship Timeline
Swift has been known for targeting her exes through her songs. Even Mayer, who she dated briefly, received a taste of his own medicine.
The duo sparked relationship rumors in 2009 and 2010 after they collaborated on Mayer's "Half of My Heart." At that time, Swift admitted that she was really excited about working with him as she had been a huge fan of his.
However, things seemingly went sour after Swift dropped her song "Dear John." The breakup song is about a relationship with an older man - which happened to them. At that time, Swift was only 19, while Mayer was 32.
Years later, Mayer said he did not deserve to be treated like that, calling the move "a lousy thing" for Swift to do.
"I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down," he said. "I mean, how will you feel if, at the lowest, you have ever been and someone kicked you even lower?"
But instead of a song, Swift beat Mayer again with a different move.
