In August 2022, Doja Cat surprised fans with a bold new look: she shaved off all her hair, garnering both praise and jokes from fans and netizens alike.
While most of the jokes seemed pretty harmless, some netizens touched a nerve when they started comparing the rapper's shaved head to Britney Spear's shaved head.
"It's so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through and make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life," Doja Cat said, referring to Spears' infamous 2007 meltdown.
And despite all the emphasis advocates and Spears' fans placed on mental health, many still chose to poke fun at the delicate subject of Spears' shaved head.
"Every time I see a comment like that, I can't compute what's happening, other than it's just an awful thing," the 27-year-old rapper continued.
Why Did Britney Spears' Shave Her Head?
One of the most popular moments in recent pop culture history is when TMZ caught Spears shaving her head during a meltdown.
This event reportedly happened after the "Toxic" singer was banned from seeing her two children with Kevin Federline: Sean and Jayden.
Spears opened up about the public meltdown in a documentary released in 2019: "It was, you know, 'I just don't want anybody, anybody touching my head. I don't want anyone touching my hair. I'm sick of people touching my hair.'"
The "Oops I Did It Again" singer was in a very vulnerable state, "It just seemed like everybody was waiting for the crash to happen."
Unlike Spears, Doja Cat shaved her head for a different reason-although the reason was still rooted in mental health.
During an Instagram Live, the rapper revealed why she made the drastic change in her look. "It's just a fucking nightmare, dude. I'm over it."
"I wasn't working out and wasn't really taking care of myself in the way that I wanted to. I was like, 'I need to do something,' so I just chopped it all off. And I could see the shape of my head. I could see my whole face. I can see my ears, now that I don't have a wig that's glued to my forehead," she explained.
