How did the Creation of 'One Week' Come About?

The idea of writing the Barenaked Ladies' hit song, "One Week," was guitarist, Ed Robertson's idea. Robertson had a fight with his wife. He shared, that, even though, he knew he was in the wrong, he went through different stages of their fight so he could save his reputation. Hence, Robertson came up with a song that narrated different stages of quarrelling in a relationship, as reported on The Guardian. With this said, "One Week" was written.

The band had an impression that "One Week" would be a silly song, and would be good as a fun bonus track, instead. Robertson did not agree with their label's decision to make "One Week" a single. However, Robertson was glad to be wrong when "One Week" reached the top of the chart.
