Kiernan AKA Forbes Dead: Rapper Gunned Down Moments Before Performance

Beloved South African rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes was fatally shot before his performance last Friday night, February 10.

Forbes was spotted at a restaurant in Durban, South Africa.

The rapper's family confirmed AKA's death as their son's in a Tweet posted on Forbes' official Twitter account.

"It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban police," the tweet read.

According to the parents' statement, Forbes was survived by his beloved daughter, Kairo, and his parents.

"To many, he was AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and gave love in return," they continued.

Per The New York Times, Forbes was slated for a performance in a nightclub last Feb. 10, 2023. AKA's death was revealed to take place as he was walking over to his own car in the coastal area of the city after 10:00 p.m.

Two armed gunmen approached Forbes, firing several gunshots near him before escaping. Reports also said that another victim was shot dead, believed to be caused by the same suspects. The victim was AKA's friend Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane.

As of this writing, the police are still in pursuit for the search of the suspects who fled the scene of the crime shortly after the violent altercation.

According to Billboard, AKA was supposed to promote his new album, "Mass Country," a project he would be releasing at the end of February.

Meanwhile, tributes and condolences have poured out on Forbes' Instagram account.

"Shame on the persons who stole this light from the world. Unbelievable. RIP," DJ Justin James said.

"f a total stranger like myself cannot believe this news I cannot begin to even this how his family is coping at this moment!!!Rest in power aka your legacy shall live on!" a fan shared.

"For the first time in my life I am crying over the death of a celebrity. You were a legend. Ai my heart breaks for your child and your family. RIP. You Will forever be my favourite rapper. Can't wait for them to drop your new album," another said.

As of this writing, the reason why AKA Forbes was gunned down is still up in the air.
