Charli XCX isn't too pleased with how this year's award shows chose their nominees, and she has come forward to make her feelings known.
Last week, the world was witness to the 2023 Grammy Awards, the very same show wherein Harry Styles bagged several of the night's most coveted awards, leaving many stunned and some furious.
One of which is the British singer herself, who posted a selfie on Instagram and Twitter with the caption: "Me not being nominated for a grammy for 'Crash' is like Mia Goth not being nominated for an Oscar for Pearl and only further proves that people don't wanna see hot evil girls thrive."
The "Good Ones" singer is referring to her fifth studio album, "Crash," released in March 2022, which includes the songs "Beg For You" with Rina Sawayama and "New Shapes" featuring Christine the Queens and Caroline Polacheck.
Her statement was echoed by Grimes, who shared her insight into what happens behind the scenes, "The Grammies are so irrelevant I wouldn't even sweat it.
"I stopped even clocking them in any capacity when I was on the producer of the year board and they quite literally would not allow me to nominate anyone who wasn't on a pre-fabricated list that was exceptionally boring.
"I was one of 3 women and the only person under 40 for sure. It's literally not a relevant thing."
The Second Snub
Following her Grammy's upset, Charli XCX was hit with another roadblock: the BRITs Awards.
On the red carpet, she was interviewed by BBC, who asked about the lack of female artists included in the BRITs Awards' Artist of the Year shortlist.
"Great question. I've heard a lot of chat about the fact there weren't enough females in album cycle and that's why no one was nominated," she replied. "But, I was in album cycle and I had a Number One album [with 'Crash'].
"There's many of us, so I don't know. You should ask them. We're doing everything right. I don't think it's our fault. I think it might be theirs."
.
According to Rolling Stone, the BRITs Awards' nominees for Artist of the Year included Harry Styles, Fred Again, Stormzy, George Ezra, and Central Cee.
Styles, who won the award, gave a shoutout to female artists who were no nominated for the award: "I'm very aware of my privilege up here tonight. So, this award is for Rina [Sawayama], Charli [XCX], Florence [Welch], Mabel and Becky [Hill]," naming just five of the worthy yet un-nominated artists."
This BRITs upset was also noted by several other people. NME reported that a spokesperson expressed their "disappointment" with the lack of women in the category.
"We also have to recognize that 2022 saw fewer high profile women artists in cycle with major releases as was the case in 2021."
